Tell us how you came to be in the role you are today…
Growing up with a hippy mum, I always was taken to naturopaths as I had a lot of skin issues. Being around them a lot, I was always naturally inclined to holistic medicine rather than allopathic. Down the track a few years and I was meeting some friends for brunch and thoroughly underwhelmed about starting the next semester of my teaching degree. My friends asked me what I wanted to do and I answered with how interested I was in naturopathy. They encouraged me to look into it and 2 days later I was enrolled in an Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy. A few twists along the way and now I’ve finished my Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy) and working for I Quit Sugar as a customer service consultant – answering questions about health and helping people find their way!
What would be your best advice to someone starting out on the same career path as you?
Start as soon as you can! I found that everything I learnt throughout my degree was helpful from a practitioner point of view but also from an every day perspective. It doesn’t matter if it takes you a while to get there – your journey is unique to you for a reason!
How do you relax when you’re not busy answering questions at I Quit Sugar?
I love hitting the beach with or without my friends. We also play a lot of team sports together, which I thrive on – oztag, netball, soccer. Yoga is something that I turn to when I’m particularly stressed out or I can feel my body starting to push its limits.
What’s the hardest thing about your job?
Definitely having to taste-test all the new IQS recipes. Just kidding, that’s something you should all be jealous of! The hardest thing would be remembering to take time out and put myself first sometimes.
In five words, tell us the most important qualities for someone in your particular role…
Empathy, curiosity, enthusiasm, perceptiveness and strength.
What do you enjoy most about working in your field?
I love working one on one with people and developing individual strategies designed uniquely for them. We are all so unique and so our treatments should be too!
What’s next on your horizon?
Working on a way to open my very own clinic rooms.
If you weren’t a Naturopath you would have been a…
I always thought I would be an archeologist. My mum wanted me to be a doctor but I am terrified of the idea of cutting into people!
Why are you such a firm believer in the I Quit Sugar philosophy?
JERFing and eating whole foods is such an important aspect of our lives that it’s really easy to look over, in place of more ‘convenient’ alternatives. I love that IQS offers options and strategies on how to do this in such a practical way.
The IQS Team are coming for dinner. What are you cooking for us?
I would bake some simple but delicious chicken, seasoned with turmeric, paprika and garlic and team it with baked veggies (sweet potato, Brussels sprouts, onion, pumpkin and beetroots). To serve, I’d make a very green salad of rocket, spinach, broccoli, peas, beans and capsicum with a lemon, olive oil and tahini drizzle. For dessert, it’s a no brainer – a cheese platter with olives.
