If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ll likely be very familiar with our core philosophies and reasons for ditching the sweet stuff.
But did you know that over 50 per cent of Aussies still exceed the daily sugar intake recommended by the World Health Organisation’s (WHO)?
Worse still, 76 per cent of teens are exceeding their daily limit, in large part due to their consumption of sugary soft drinks.
So, what can you do?
Put simply, we need you to help us spread the word! Sugar is everywhere and even if you’re trying to steer clear it’s virtually impossible with research suggesting up to 74 per cent of packaged foods contain some hidden sugars. Plus, with more than 70 different names for the sweet stuff, education is key. Here’s what you need to know…
- Sugar is addictive: the sweet stuff activates the same reward centre in the brain as hard drugs like cocaine, releasing dopamine (AKA the feel-good hormone), whenever we indulge.
- Sugar increases inflammation in the body: studies have now made the link between sugar (namely fructose) and inflammation. When you consider that inflammation is also widely accepted as the root cause of many diseases, it makes sense that when you kick the sweet stuff to the curb, inflammation markers also go down.
- Sugar makes us fat: while for every other food we eat, our hormones tell us when we’re full and satisfied, when we consume fructose, there’s no such function. In fact, fructose actually suppresses leptin (your satiety hormone) meaning you can literally gorge on sugar, and never feel full.
- Sugar makes us sick: with more and more research linking sugar consumption to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer and metabolic syndrome, there’s now no denying that this has become an epidemic.
