Angelique’s story: “Quitting sugar helped my fertility.”

Angelique’s story: “I quit sugar and healed my infertility.”

As an expert on ITV’s Sugar Free Farm, you wouldn’t expect nutritionist Angelique Panagos to have her own battles with food.

But with a history of eating disorders, polycystic ovarian disease and thyroid issues, Angelique has been on a long journey towards healing and self-acceptance.

After a heartbreaking miscarriage, she decided to quit sugar for good. And as her body healed, she fell pregnant with her daughter Isabella Rose!

In my 20s, I was like a rockstar.

Partying, drinking, not sleeping – burning the candle at both ends. I gained a lot of weight and my periods were painful to the point where I had to go home from work.

Eating was my way of control (until it was uncontrollable).

I developed anorexia and lost more than 20kg in four months. My hair fell out and I stopped menstruating completely.

Then something clicked and I couldn’t stop eating. I would eat a whole chocolate cake and then purge. I’d wake up with sweet wrappers all around my bed and not remember eating them.

I became obsessed with counting calories.

I’d worked out that if I just ate a bag of liquorice allsorts all day, the calories would work out – with no regard that they were just made of sugar! Not surprisingly, I had serious migraines and mood swings.

I would eat just a bag of liquorice allsorts all day.

I became very, very sick.

I was very inflamed and developed an autoimmune thyroid disease. Unknown to me at the time, I also had polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which was the cause of my menstrual issues and mucked with my insulin levels.

Between the bulimia and the hormonal issues, I went from 43kg to 78kg. I remember being being offered a seat on the tube on two separate occasions because my belly was so extended.

Between the bulimia and the hormonal issues, I went from 43kg to 78kg.

I needed to sort myself out.

So I studied at university to become a nutritional therapist – to try and heal myself, and help heal others. That’s when it really clicked it’s not normal to have irregular periods and I found out about the PCOS.

I started a very slow journey of self-acceptance and healing. I lost 18kg the healthy way. I ate for nutrition, lowered my stress levels and exercised because I loved, not hated, my body.

But a lifetime of health problems impacted my fertility.

My husband and I started trying for a baby. It took about nine months to fall pregnant the first time. But something wasn’t right and I tragically had a miscarriage at 10 weeks.

I started a cleanse, focussing on my gut health. I stripped out any remaining added sugar and refined carbs. Sadly, I had a second miscarriage two years later. But two months after that, I fell pregnant again.

Third time’s a charm!

Everything felt right. I stayed active and didn’t have any sugar cravings at all. Even at my baby shower we had a sugar-free high tea!

My rainbow baby Isabella Rose arrived safely on the 8th of February 2017 at 8:44 AM. My husband and I feel so, so blessed. I can’t wait to raise Isabella with a healthy, balanced, beautiful relationship to food.
