Jess’ story: “Brownies might give you 5 minutes of satisfaction. REAL food lasts a lifetime.”

Jess Poolman's Story

Full-time working mum Jess had always used sugar as a crutch to get her through stressful times.

After years of dieting and bingeing, she decided to try the I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program. Now she’s found a whole new way to deal with stress: just eating real food. Here’s Jess with her story…

***

I’d always been a closet bad eater.

I work in management and have a two-year-old daughter. I’m also a perfectionist, so I hold myself to really high expectations. Needless to say, as soon as I was stressed, I’d head straight for the sugar.

I ate a lot of ice cream and baked goods when I was pregnant and gained 18 kilos. I lost the weight within a year by eating mostly Paleo and working out twice a day – but this just wasn’t sustainable.

Eventually sugar took hold again and I gained about 4 kilos back. But more than this, I was really not in a good place emotionally. I know I needed to do something.

I don’t think I could’ve done this without the Program.

I’m the type of person who needs accountability, so I really enjoyed connecting with others around the world doing the same thing as me.

When I felt stressed, I’d hit the Forums. Everyone was so supportive.

I was amazed to learn how much sugar is in EVERYTHING.

That’s another reason why I’m glad I joined the Program rather than just try it on my own. I’m so much more conscious of the food I buy and the amount of sugar in it. Plus, there were so many tips for quick meals and easy snacks to try.

I absolutely LOVED the recipes.

The BLATT burger was the best veggie burger I’ve ever had!

The veggie loaf, avocado smash and the pulled pork have all become regulars in my repertoire.

I’ve lost 6 inches around my body!

Between my tummy, hips, busy, arms and legs. And about 4 kilos in total. Also, though I’ve always had relatively nice skin, now it’s almost like it glows!

My allergies have all but disappeared.

I’ve had seasonal allergies and asthma since birth. I am also allergic to dust, mold, pets, you name it. After the Program, when others were suffering during the summer with pollen, I had zero allergy issues.

I’m doing better at handling stress and emotions.

Before I quit sugar, I would typically go to the dessert shop down the street from work and get a brownie or piece of cake as soon as I felt stressed out.

Now I realise those only give me maybe five minutes of satisfaction, whereas going for a walk, cooking a delicious nourishing meal for my family or reading a book give lasting benefits.

I’ve learned that I need to find ways to deal with my emotions that isn’t through food.

I’ve been trying movement, meditation and colouring books.

While I’m not perfect, each day I’m building my sugar-quitting muscle. And it’s getting stronger and stronger.
