Renee is just like any 24-year-old girl. Between being an Ambassador for the Steve Waugh Foundation and working as a personal assistant, she loves spending time with family and friends – especially her mum. But she also has a rare form of dwarfism called geleophysic dysplasia, meaning she has the body of a two-year-old.
The condition, which causes the bones to stop growing, led to many complications for Renee, including kidney dysfunction, severe pneumonia and heart failure. As someone who constantly chose “low-fat” foods and organic juices over junk food, Renee believed this was just something she’d have to learn to live with… until she quit sugar. Here is her inspiring story.
I always believed I was on a healthy diet.
From a young age, I have looked after my nutrition because of my health conditions. My diet consisted of LOTS of fruits and so-called “healthy” sweeteners such as honey by the spoonful. I loved dried fruit, organic “sugar-free” fruit juices and skim or low-fat foods.

But my health only continued to get worse.
I’ve undergone two open heart surgeries for a mitral valve replacement. Five years ago I also had really bad pneumonia which led to sleep apnoea and needing to being on oxygen 24/7.
I also had bloating, weight fluctuations, extreme fatigue and low immunity. Doctors could not figure out what was wrong with me even after many admissions to hospital! Eventually, I learnt to live with it. I thought it must have to do with my condition.
It was all meant to be!
Just over a year ago I was hospitalised for a very bad chest infection. It took me months to recover. I believe all this happened for a reason – let me explain why!
One day I spoke to a friend who had the same symptoms. She told me the I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program had changed her life. Only four weeks into quitting sugar, her cholesterol had dropped significantly! She also lost about 20kg and a couple of dress sizes!
Mum is a lot happier now. She loves all the delicious fresh food we make together and the exciting healthy wholefood cafes we go to. I have always been proud of mum but I’m even prouder of her to do something so good for herself after all she has given up for me.

I don’t miss sugar at all.
I now know that fructose reacts with me badly, especially because my body is so small. Knowing this, I will NEVER go back to consuming fructose ever again! I basically just eat real, whole foods, which I find so easy and I still feel satisfied and full. I’ve also made many of the IQS desserts and they are DELICIOUS. There’s no going back for me.
