“I’ve Lost 8 Kilos”: How The 8-Week Program Transformed this GP's Health – And Her Patients'

In the demanding world of healthcare, Jenny found herself facing the repercussions of long hours and unhealthy eating habits. Ironic, we know. That’s where the 8-Week Program came in – with convenient meal plans and delicious recipes, the Aussie GP revolutionised her relationship with food and her body.

“When my work schedule changed and hours increased, I fell into bad eating habits," Jenny says. "I started skipping breakfast, eating on the run, and would arrive home absolutely starving.”

That’s usually where it starts – skipping meals leads to snacking on sugary foods and intensifying cravings. Quick fixes like sugary muesli bars, and indulging in ice cream after challenging days at the clinic became Jenny's routine. The toll was evident – lethargy, headaches, weight gain, and disrupted sleep.

“Inevitably I began reaching for something quick and easy, like a piece of toast for dinner, but it then became sugary muesli bars, pies and I’d even treat myself after a long day at work to an ice cream,” she says. “All of a sudden, I was eating more sugar than EVER!”

It was after gaining 15 kilos that Jenny says she realised something needed to change. That’s when she turned to the 8-WeeK Program. Inspired by the meal plans, simple layout and approach, she embarked on a journey to reclaim her health. She says the results were instant.

“I quickly rediscovered my love for cooking and the layout of the Program made it so easy to prepare meals,” she says. “While I initially missed my “quick fix” jam on toast, soon, my go-to snacks became nuts, seeds and hummus.”

The initial step involved a meticulous overhaul of Jenny's pantry and fridge, bidding farewell to sugar-laden items.

“Initially it looked bleak and boring, but after my first proper (sugar-free) grocery shop, my fridge was full with an array of fresh, colourful veggies,” Jenny says.

The positive changes were profound. Jenny's experienced whole-body benefits, from her mental health to the scales.

“Now? My energy is back, my headaches have disappeared, and my quality of sleep is fantastic – I don’t even get the 3pm slump anymore,” she says. “Best of all, I’ve lost 8kg and now that I have more energy, I know I can lose the rest as I increase my exercise.”

While the main goal of the 8-Week Program isn’t to lose weight, it is a fringe benefit that many of our members notice. We don’t count calories or watch the scales, we prefer to focus on nourishing your body from the inside out and taking note of what makes you feel good, rather than stressing about numbers – after all, diet culture and our society’s obsession with fat has riddled so many of us with shame and guilt around food, when we believe the conversation around food should be about experimentation, enjoyment and understanding what makes your body feel its best. Having said that, we know that are sugar addiction is one of the number one contributors to the soaring rates of obesity, with numbers having tripled since 1975 and billions living with this condition, it’s one of the major health crises affecting the public. Studies prove that excessive sugar intake is a contributing factor in obesity, partly because it leads to the development of visceral fat – this is the kind that surrounds the abdominal organs and puts people at higher risk for diabetes, heart disease and liver disease. So, not only does too much sugar lead to excess weight gain, it leads to the most dangerous kind of weight gain. That’s why GP Jenny was so keen to continue combatting her sugar habits – and when you’re eating real, whole foods, it’s surprisingly easy. You don’t need to restrict calories or eat dissatisfying meals – we’re all about hearty curries, roasts, bakes and even desserts like cheesecakes, muffins and tortes. Yep, you read that right.

Being sugar-free became second nature for Jenny. Even during overseas trips, she stayed on track and confidently said "no thank you" to sugary temptations. But Jenny's transformation didn’t exist in a vacuum – she says it inspired friends and colleagues to join her on the sugar-free journey.

“I’m so proud to be able to be an example for my colleagues and patients,” she says. “Quitting sugar isn’t a fad diet, it’s a change to better your life! This really is the lifestyle I want to have and the way I want to nourish myself and those who visit my home."

Jenny encourages everyone to embrace the experience fully – from prepping the kitchen to gathering support.

“Embrace the experience fully – enjoy the cooking, laugh a lot and anticipate your success and good health!”
