Hold it right there – don’t throw out your fruit peels and tea bags! We’ve got an environmentally-friendly way to use up your food waste that benefits both you and the planet. Here’s how.
Aussies waste around 7.3 million tonnes of food each year – that’s 295 kilos each! The average household is throwing out 20% of their food, with food waste responsible for around 5% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. It’s no small issue, and just a few changes can help us keep waste out of landfill – here’s how we love to use up our food waste.
Composting
Composting is a fun way to turn food waste into nutrient-rich soil that can be used in gardens or in your indoor herb garden. Simply gather food scraps such as fruit and vegetable peels, eggshells, coffee grounds and tea bags, then add them to a compost bin or pile. The end result will be a soil that can help reduce waste and improve your garden or houseplants.
Regrow vegetables
Vegetables can often be regrown from their scraps, celery, lettuce and green onions are great for this purpose. Place the cut end of the vegetable in water and watch as they grow. Once the plant has grown roots, you can transplant it into soil and let it grow.
Make broth or stock
Vegetable scraps such as carrot tops, onion peels and celery leaves can be used to make a nutritious broth. Add the scraps to a pot of water and simmer for a few hours. Strain the broth and use it as a base for soups – it’s full of nutrients and saves you having to buy stock!
Feed backyard chickens
If you have any chickens or know someone who does, many food scraps can be fed to them. Chickens love carrot tops, celery leaves and lettuce.
