3 Reasons We Love Peanut Butter

This Peanut Butter Lovers Month, we decided it’s time to celebrate the world’s most loved nut butter. Here are 3 reasons to spread some of this nutritional powerhouse-in-a-jar on your toast!

It keeps you feeling fuller for longer

Looking for ways to fight those midnight snacking urges? Look no further! Peanut butter keeps those hunger pangs at bay, and a lot of it comes down to the protein content. Just 2 tablespoons of the stuff pack a whopping 8 grams of protein – to put this into perspective, we need 0.8 grams of protein per kilo of weight, so if you’re 60 kilos, you’ll need 48 grams of protein. Research shows that this nutrient promotes satiety and fullness, thereby preventing overeating. Protein also plays an important role in muscle growth and health, making it the perfect post-workout snack.

Helps regulate appetite

If you’ve been struggling to lose weight as a result of an overwhelming appetite and cravings, it might be worth adding a bit of peanut butter into your diet. A study found that those who added a few tablespoons of peanut butter to their brekkie found greater satiety and a reduced appetite when compared to those who missed out on the peanut butter. More research suggests peanut butter may also boost our metabolism and improve our ability to maintain our weight.

Helps with weight loss or maintenance

As we mentioned about, the satisfaction and appetite hormone regulation that come with the protein in peanut butter play a role in maintaining a healthy weight – but it’s also the healthy fats in this nut butter that contribute. These fats leave us feeling full, reduce cravings for sugary foods and reduce the chance of our blood sugars spiking. There is an extensive body of evidence that supports the ability of peanuts and peanut butter to bolster the weight loss process. Interestingly, a study found that those who enjoy peanut butter in their diets had lower, healthier BMIs than those who skipped out on the spread. Some research suggests it could be to do with the fact that the calories in the peanuts aren’t completely absorbed like other foods, leaving us with a lower intake of calories from the peanut butter, but higher satiety and satisfaction.

Choose your peanut butter carefully

Remember, if you want to reap the health benefits of peanut butter, it’s important to choose the brand carefully! Ensure there are no added sugars or preservatives, along with picking the right container. Plastic jars are notorious for leaching microplastics into the food, so your peanut butter could be harvesting more than just nutty goodness! When we consume these microplastics, our gut health is thrown out of whack, along with our immune system and endocrine system. Phthalates are one such type of plastic, they’re used to increase the flexibility of the container, but when we consume them, these inflammatory chemicals have been shown to negatively affect our endocrine system. Long-term exposure can lead to issues with fertility, child development and reproductive function, according to studies. If it’s wrapped or packaged in plastic, chances are you’ll be eating some of that plastic! So, go for a glass jar for your peanut butter to ensure you’re only eating the good stuff when you spread this nutritional powerhouse over your morning toast.
